The Journey

The road to today has been long and windy.

After purchasing tear-downs in 2017, two years of design work led to a three-year construction journey beginning with the guest house, followed by the main house and finally, the pool house.

The overall motivation and inspiration stayed the same: up-island vibes, but down-island, by the beach, bike path and the gorgeous backdrop of Katama Farm and its close to 170 acres of bucolic fields and unobstructed views.

With a master’s degree in environmental and urban planning, the owner had strong opinions throughout the design process, including positioning the home slightly west to maximize the beauty of the setting sun.

Visitors will perhaps take note that the farm feel extends to the property with a non-manicured lawn, including clovers and new mature plantings throughout. Hundreds of feet of gorgeous stone walls were built to both delineate the property to the south and west while paying tribute to the rural beauty of the Vineyard. Everyone in the family – including the beloved Jack Russell Terriers – enjoying eating from the blueberry, raspberry, and blackberry bushes, on the back-side of the property.

Other intentional imperfections abound, promoting a laid-back vibe and user-friendly surfaces, like the distressed wood floors throughout - unafraid of the impact of sand from the beach. All of these designs extend across the main house, guest home and pool structure, albeit the guest house has a slightly more beachy vibe.

Special appreciation goes to Louise Barzilay, owner of Studio BZB, for her vision and insights in helping design the property, including the choice of furniture throughout all three buildings, and the use of textiles and décor that pay tribute to the years the owner spent working in West Africa. Fortunately, the earthy tones go perfectly with the farm vibe.
